Strong together – for our furry helpers
During military operations, service dogs must work in dark, confined spaces without their handler. When the dog notices something, it cannot immediately signal this to its handler. It has to run all the way back to them first. Dog handlers know exactly that their dog has spotted something when they see it return, but they still have to figure out what it was. A newly developed camera system transfers a video and audio stream directly from the dog to its handler. This allows the handler to see exactly what their dog sees and, in some cases, give the animal a direct order.
‘The project helps us support the dogs better and understand situations faster’, Christian Wendland, project leader at the Bundeswehr Cyber Innovation Hub, commented. As a formed soldier, he has concrete ideas of what the device should do.
